Import contacts from a CSV file

The Import Contacts section bulk-loads contacts from a CSV file instead of one at a time. Always start from the sample template: it has every field in the format the import expects.

Before you start

You need Contact Manager permissions and Microsoft Excel (or another editor that saves CSV). The import only accepts CSV files. Every record needs, at minimum, a first name, last name, business unit, and an IsUser value of TRUE or FALSE.

Steps

  1. In the Import Contacts section, click the Sample button on the left side of the screen.

  2. The template downloads as a CSV file. Open it in Excel.

  3. Add your contacts, following the format in the file exactly. Key fields:

    • FirstName and LastName: mandatory.

    • BusinessUnit: mandatory; must match an existing business unit.

    • IsUser: mandatory; TRUE for a credentialed user, FALSE for a contact.

    • ContactLists: the exact list names, separated by semicolons with no spaces.

    • At least one email (WorkEmail or PersonalEmail) and one phone number, or the import warns you.

  4. Save the file as a CSV: File > Save As, and keep CSV (Comma Delimited) selected. Do not let Excel convert it.

  5. Back in Import Contacts, click the green Import icon.

  6. Navigate to your CSV file and click Open.

  7. The import reports how many contacts were uploaded, and the results appear below.

The colour of each record and its Message column tell you what happens next.
